Ah calories… those nasty little buggers that drive people crazy and totally confuse even the savviest of dieters.

Firstly, I strongly recommend that you give up counting calories as it is such a flawed and unsustainable way to lose fat, improve your health and lead an enjoyable lifestyle.

Whilst foods can be measured in regards to the number of calories they contain, we often assume that that’s how many calories we will be absorbing. This is simply not the case.

The way you cook your food, the amount you chew your food, the meal you previously ate, the foods you combine in one meal, the fibre content of the meal, your hydration level, your stress level and your digestive bacteria all affect how many calories you actually absorb.

Furthermore, a calorie from a lean piece of chicken is VERY different to a calorie from a doughnut. We need to be more concerned with the types of foods we are eating – not how many calories they contain.

So, always opt for foods that are as close to nature as possible. Fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes, lean meats, poultry and seafood are all loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein and healthy fats.

If you eat plenty of these foods it will become irrelevant how many calories you are eating. So, you can now stop counting calories and keep your sanity too.
