In this day and age, it’s important that we are all politically correct and accepting of anyone and everyone, regardless of who they are and their choices in life.

This has led to a ‘big is beautiful’ movement in western cultures whereby overweight people are encouraged to embrace their larger size and lifestyle choices.

They are told that they don’t need to change, it is the rest of the people who just need to be more accepting. As such, there are now plus size clothing stores all over the country and even plus size models on TV, on the catwalk and in magazines.

At the risk of offending everyone reading this rant, this ‘movement’ horrifies me.

Please note: I DO NOT CARE WHAT ANYONE LOOKS LIKE OR WHAT THEY CHOOSE TO DO WITH THEIR LIFE.

What I do care about is that by being over weight (and embracing it), these people are significantly increasing their risk of ill health, debilitating disease and ultimately an early and unpleasant death.

As unpleasant as this is for the individual, let’s think of others for a minute here. If you get Cancer, Cardio Vascular Disease, Diabetes, have a Stroke or any other Obesity related disease, it’s your family that are going to have to care for you and watch you suffer. Obviously this would place them under great emotional and financial stress. Not exactly a nice way to be spending time with the people you love huh?…

Not to mention the burden you would place on our already struggling Medicare system. Obesity, and it’s related diseases, is costing the Australian economy billions of dollars each year. This is money that could be better spent on much more important issues. And in case you haven’t noticed, the economy already has enough on its plate at the moment.

So, yes, you are entitled to live how you want and embrace the way you look. I’m all for freedom of choice and self acceptance. But let’s all stop and think about how our choices in life are affecting the people around us as well as this great country of ours.

If you’re not willing to lose fat, get in shape and improve your health for yourself, at least do it for those around you. Please.
